At the University of Illinois Urbana‑Champaign, the Companion Animal Program has been a leader in companion animal science for more than 50 years, combining innovation, education, research, and outreach to benefit students, industry partners, and the public.
The program began in 1974, when faculty recognized the need for academic study beyond traditional livestock science. Since then, it has grown into one of the most comprehensive companion animal science programs in the nation.
Program Highlights
Two Main Divisions
1. Companion Animal Biology and Humane Education (I-CABHE)
I CABHE combines biological sciences with human-animal interaction studies.
Students explore animal behavior, welfare science, ethical care, and community engagement. Graduates are prepared for careers in animal welfare advocacy, humane education, and policy.
2. Companion Animal Nutrition (Illinois CAN)
Illinois CAN focuses on nutrition research and training, including ingredient evaluation, metabolic health, microbiome science, pet food technology, and therapeutic nutrition.
Graduate students can pursue Master’s or Ph.D. programs in companion animal nutrition, making a direct impact on pet health and the pet food industry.
Illinois Pets Education · Translation · Support (I-PETS)
I-PETS is the Extension arm of Illinois CAN, providing science-based education and outreach to pet owners, animal care professionals, and the pet industry. The program delivers practical guidance through workshops, webinars, community engagement, and online resources, connecting research to real-world application.
A Legacy of Leadership
Pioneers such as Dr. Jim Corbin helped establish the academic companion animal program in the 1970s and influenced the development of modern pet nutrition.
Over the decades, faculty and students have expanded the program with new courses, research specialties, international learning experiences, and professional certificates that attract students from around the world.
